At least, that's what I read in an article lately... (Where did I put that thing?) Maybe it will pop up in a search... Hmmm...

Exactly! Kindness completes the karmic contraption. Or something like that. Hey, what do you want from me? It's freaking Friday the thirteenth, for Pete's sake!

OK, I'm better, now. Friday is still Friday. It could be a Monday! (the 13th!) Oh yes. That could be really bad... why, I remember, as a youth, going fishing on a Monday the 13th... not only was I having no good luck with the fishing, but, while my back was turned, I got a bite that took my pole out to the middle of the river! Later, after losing still more of my tackle, I wandered down river to a spot where the water gently flowed over a small spillway. I decided to cross. After just a few steps, my foot encountered a mysterious clump. Curious, I investigated, and found that the clump was the business end of a broom. Lifting the broom out of the water, I saw a wire attached to the top of the handle... and more wire.. a wire cage... a cage with a fish inside! But this was no carp or catfish, this was a Walleyed Pike, about two feet long!

Happily, I took home my prize,
where a friend showed me how to fillet.
Happy, the boy, who learned
that bad luck need not last all day.

It is a special week-end. Monday will be a day off for lots of folks, in celebration of our good fortune to have had a man like Martin Luther King, Jr. walk among us, leading the important struggle for civil rights. It should be a day for reflection on what our common humanity has in store. Will we learn how to end war? Will war put an end to us?

There is something that we can all do, anytime we are involved in traffic, to promote progress toward World Peace... Be kind and thoughtful of others. By setting the safe and courteous example, we begin the process of creating "Road-Peace" as a step toward World Peace.

GOTTA SING LOUD...

As the great poet/philosopher/song writer/singer, Arlo Guthrie said, "Ya gotta sing loud if ya wanna end war and stuff." But, all the songs have been sung... millions - no, make that guzzillions of times, and we still have "war and stuff."

Perhaps we expect too much of a song. Maybe, a more modest goal could be served with a song. How about texting while driving? Could a song help people make better decisions in that regard? Let's give it a go...

Remember the tune about Davy Crockett? He was the frontiersman of great renown who is said to have said, "Be sure you're right, then, go ahead." You can hear the late Fess Parker (the actor who played Davy) sing the tune, here. Or, you can see and hear the words, along with some clips from the Disney production, here.

What could be more fitting than to use his tune to convince people to make sure they do the right thing and put away texting while behind the wheel?

When and if permission can be obtained from Disney, you may hear the tune with new lyrics in radio spots. Until then, there should be no reason not to sing it yourself, and teach it to others. Especially if you teach, or run a driving school!

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

arrives, this Sunday, November 20, 2011.

"...observed every third Sunday in November each year. This will be a major advocacy day for road traffic injury prevention and WHO and the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration encourage governments and NGOs around the world to commemorate this day."

Signs of the Times?

Millions of dollars have been spent on signs, in the US.

If the signs are disregarded, the money is not well spent.

One of the cardinal rules for gridlock prevention is: "If you can't get out, don't go in" (the intersection). So, what sort of signs do we see in D.C. to admonish drivers not to block intersections?

"DON'T BLOCK THE BOX"

...Really? How many drivers, surrounded by big boxes that we know as buildings, are going to equate "BOX" with intersection? Can't we do better than that?

How about signs that simply say:

...enclosed in lines at right angles, forming a diagram of a crossing should complete an image that leaves no doubt. The sign will also be a positive , rather than negative, motivator.

There is a theory that holds that the human mind likes positive thoughts and motivations, and sometimes eliminates the negativity, while keeping the positive. Might this account for drivers, seeing a sign that begins with "Do not," doing the opposite of what the sign says?

Another example...

Driveways and minor streets, near busy intersections are often blocked by thoughtless drivers, in spite of easily understandable signs.

It is a frustrating way to start your journey, when you can't even enter the flow of traffic. At this particular location (a parking lot for a medical building), it is especially difficult to make a left turn upon exiting, since one is likely to be blocked by all three lanes of traffic.

Sometimes, one wonders

if these drivers pay attention to signs at all.

How about this one?

As a Vietnam veteran, myself, I understand that the purpose of our military is to keep peace. Folks in the military want peace even more than the rest of us. The fact that they are so devoted to defending us, that they make such great sacrifices, should not go unappreciated.
So, gridlocksmith says to our defenders..

THANK YOU!

Perhaps the very best show of gratitude would be to work for peace,

so that they do not have to fight, anymore.

I know that sounds naive, but...

Will peace only come to the world when we have wiped ourselves off the face of the planet? With bio-chemical and nuclear weapons, that scenario is becoming a real possibility.

There is another, brighter option. It may be a "long shot," but, considering the other course, it is worth giving it maximum effort. "We the people" - not the governments, will lead as peacemakers. This action is based on Gandhi's advice: Be the change you wish to see in the world. Social mores have not yet evolved to the point that we humans consistently treat one another as precious, loving and intelligent beings that deserve respect, patience, forgiveness, helpfulness and thoughtfulness. By choosing to evolve, as individuals, we create a more evolved society.

We all need to be treated.... well.
We all need to treat others.. well,
in order to be treated........... well.

Whether or not we feel that we (or anyone else)

deserve to be treated well, is not relevant

to our progress toward becoming "peace full" humans.

As we learn to be kinder
It will be a reminder
There's no need for chagrin;
For the kindness within
Becomes a "true self" finder.

The decision to "evolve" into our true selves is crucial!

Love, forgiveness and compassion are instrumental, along with thoughtfulness, patience, respect and kindness, to any effort to create "World Peace."

"We must become the change we wish to see in the world."

My proposal is that all humans who desire peace commit themselves to evolving into such beings through the practice of kindness in traffic. It is a place that will provide challenges, lessons, and the incentive of survival to keep us alertly engaged in the process of becoming the peaceful humans we need to become, as we create "Road-Peace," a milestone on the road to World Peace.

The mission of road-peace.com: to encourage people to evolve into the kind, caring, thoughtful, compassionate, forgiving, patient and loving humans that we need to become in order to establish world peace.

"Road-Peace" is a first...(EDITED)

Traffic safety is, as you know, a big issue for me, and I often think about how we can get individuals to behave, in traffic, as though they gave a whit about each other. The top-down approach of writing more and more laws cannot, in the end, be totally successful in the eradication of poor behavior (on or off the road).

I believe the need for people to treat each other with kindness in traffic should have far more attention. That is why I am in the process of starting a new campaign for world peace, that encourages folks to choose to evolve, socially, into the humans we must become in order to make world peace possible. "Road-Peace" is offered as a first step. In traffic, we have the perfect training ground, full of opportunities to choose, moment to moment, to set a good example. Our patience and forgiveness will be challenged, giving us a means to gauge our progress.

Back when this was originally posted, the new site was not ready to view, but, now, although not fully functional, it is ready to begin spreading the concept that "Road-Peace is a step on the road to World Peace."

Many of my friends are fond of saying that "Peace is patriotic!" I like to say, "Road Peace" is patriotic...

A lot of people carry on about "World Peace" without doing much about it... really, what can a person do? Here is what: realize that peace will not come until we become the sort of kind-hearted, thoughtful, patient, forgiving and caring and loving people that we are required to be. This will be no small task, but, there is a great place to get started... on the road! Yes, if we dedicate ourselves to persistently set the example, as we drive, we begin to evolve into the humans we need to become. Our better behavior will naturally spread into other areas of our lives. ...and so on...

Will you help spread the word? Will you join the effort.... the "Drive For Peace?"

I am looking for folks to help start a nonprofit project that I call, "Drive For Peace." Perhaps a nonprofit org will sponsor the project?

NYC "Hack"

Now and then, I search for a traffic safety related phrase to see if something interesting pops up. The phrase, "gentle drivers" produced, of course, a variety of results, ranging from computer drivers to Star Wars At-At drivers. It also pointed out this blog post from a NYC cabby, in which pedestrians, as well as drivers, are admonished to behave themselves in a way that... well, check it out for yourself.

As you may have noticed, I'm way behind in my blog posting. There are quite a few "draft" posts, waiting for my artful prose to find its muse. Eventually, they will be posted, not in the order that they see the light of cyberspace, but in the order they were saved as drafts... so, they will, shall we say, back fill.

This will happen more frequently, as my wife continues to recover from the operation that added 2 rods and 12 screws to her neck fusing C-3 to T-1. Being a wisp of a ** year-old lady with CP, the rehab has had some challenges, but she is eager to resume a life of adventure, and longs to hit the hiking trails.

The gridlocksmith store has different departments... this one is just for bumper stickers... Buy 'em by the dozen and give them to friends!

X Marks the Spot

In South Dakota, I noticed as a child, that there were numerous signs bearing a large "X" that alerted folks that someone had died at that spot. Groups of "X" signs were at many sharp curves, effectively warning those who cared to slow down. (Slow up?) If such signs were marked with the name of the victim, we could memorialize and make others wise.

If such a program were to be instituted in other states (or nationally?) there might be a public awareness campaign...

A FELLOW FOR "MELLOW YELLOW"

With gas prices going up, it occurs to me that many folks would enjoy this side benefit of "Mellow Yellow," saving gas.

What is "Mellow Yellow?"

First, let's get a feel for frantic yellow. When one is close to an intersection when the light turns yellow, especially in the age of red light cameras, one may get frantic. "If I stop, will I get clobbered from behind? If I go, will there be a ticket in the mail? Just how long is the light going to remain yellow?" A quick decision must be made. Sometimes, we may accidentally run a red light... or, get clobbered from behind. Since the actual length of time the light remains yellow can vary, it tends to be confusing. Some have even accused authorities of "shaving the yellow" to enhance revenues.

"Mellow Yellow" to the rescue!

Wouldn't it be nice to be twice as far from the intersection when the yellow light warns that we should consider stopping?

That is what "Mellow Yellow" will do. Here is how: the yellow light period is doubled, so that it overlaps the green light. When the green disappears, half the yellow is done. This means that if the driver has not covered at least half the distance to the intersection since the yellow appeared, stopping is in order. In fact, as folks get used to being aware earlier of the impending red light, they may elect to save gas by coasting to the light.

An additional bonus: improved traffic flow for those on the other side of the intersection waiting to make a left turn. A larger gap between those who proceed through the intersection and those who are stopping should materialize. As people realize that gas prices won't rise as fast if we do everything we can to help each other conserve gas, that gap could grow even more.

The safety implications of "Mellow Yellow" are obvious; who wants to get ticketed when it is so easy to avoid? And they can't complain about "shaving the yellow!"

Perhaps insurance rates could improve in communities with "Mellow Yellow." Hmmm...

It seems that Virginia authorities have encountered a problem with enforcement of the anti-texting law... they could be witnessing dialing, rather than texting. Oh, dear! What to do?

Could the answer be to simply enforce the "full attention" provision? (Actually, doesn't this make the newer laws... redundant?)

On another note, the poster, below, can be found at the gridlocksmith store, and would be perfect for daycare centers and anywhere that children might be...

It is hard to imagine the anguish of backing out the driveway and feeling the sickening bump as one kills a beloved child! Rip this graphic off this blog and print it out for your dashboard if you must, but don't allow tragedy to strike your family!

"Caution: Drive...Distractedly?"

That was the heading on a letter to the editor of The Washington Post, last Sunday, on page C5. The writer, Meda Ling, of Reston, Virginia states,

"An electronic sign on the outer loop of the Beltway approaching a construction zone in Tysons Corner: 'I-495 Advisory. Dial 511 for Info'

"What? So we should be pulling out cellphones while driving into a construction zone to listen to a traffic advisory message? Whose brilliant idea is this?"

Gridlocksmith just has to put in his two cents worth on this.

While one should doubt that the sign was meant to encourage the action described, it certainly does nothing to indicate otherwise.

Perhaps the SHA could frame the intent more clearly with the additional words, "Before you go, be in the know." Hopefully, if one calls "511" (before departure) the info will consist of suggestions for better times, alternate routes, and the like.

Naturally, those drivers with the wisdom to have a passenger along to handle phone calls could get the latest info, without committing distracted driving.

It might be a good idea for drivers to call SHA to praise their efforts to keep us informed, while suggesting that they be more aware that, since we are driving, we may take their signs too literally.

According to the July 15, edition of The Washington Post, "...the accident-prone duo have sacrificed piles of arms, suffered battered chests and endured countless cases of whiplash, all in the name of protecting drivers and passengers." They will be part of an exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Many of us recall how these dummies raised awareness of the benefit of the seat belt. (I sometimes refer to it as a "life belt.") Can't you just hear them: "Even a dummy knows enough to buckle up!"

Congratulations to the danger driven duo, Vince and Larry!

These two have done their part to change the world, will you?

I can think of no finer way to celebrate Earth Day, than with a commitment to help replace "Road Rage" with "Road Peace," and put us on the path to Earth Peace.

Last Sunday, a local environmental group, "Friends of Sligo Creek," sponsored a "Sweep the Creek" event. Your friendly, grass roots traffic safety activist was there to lend a hand...

Most of the volunteers were younger folks; some were high-schoolers who had to fulfill a community service requirement. (Although the concept of forced volunteerism seems a wee bit oxymoron-ish, it may not be an entirely bad idea.)

Since I arrived alone, I went to work alone. Soon, however, I met Tanya, who, as you can see, was well equipped and attired for some serious cleaning up.

Tanya is a physical therapist, and knows the usefulness of the reach-and-grab-gizmo (that's a technical term) in her hand. She is a veteran at this sort of thing, and knows that the bags can get heavy, and dragging them can lead to undoing your work. The two wheeled transporter is lined and ready for things that may not fit well in bags.

Tanya's spirit and enthusiasm was contagious. She had a number of people following her into the most challenging terrain and underbrush to snag all manner of objects

By the end of the event, we had accumulated quite an assortment of trash.

Gridlocksmith surveys some of the booty for recycling potential. The suitcase (behind leg) became a carry-all for a ragged green tarp (left)which may find itself mulching a garden, and an inflatable Halloween decoration, all of which went home with avid recycler, Tanya.

Is Tanya looking forward to next Halloween?

Caring about the environment makes great sense. We need clean air and water, and freedom from toxic wastes and radiation, etc. Many believe that by learning to care more about other animals, we learn to treat each other better. There is no shortage of Earth (and human behavior) improvement tasks.

While it may be difficult to focus on more than one of these concerns at one time, we can support each others' efforts. In fact, if we are loving, caring and thoughtful, we may find ourselves doing all these things as part of our lifestyle. I'm sure that we can find ways to make these behavior changes fun. Once we start having fun, we will behave better, by habit.

R.I.P. Davy Crockett, AKA Fess Parker

Last Thursday, the 18th, saw the passing of Fess Parker at age 85. He is famous for playing the role of Davy Crockett, one of my early heroes.

The sage advice of Davy, "Make sure you're right. Then, go ahead." was advice I always tried to follow. In fact, I tried to go further, and make sure it was perfect, as well as right... which did not serve well, since "perfection" is so illusive. If one can't proceed with something unless it is guaranteed to have perfect results, nothing tends to get done. A pretty good idea might be good enough to proceed with, and adjustments can be made, later. But, if we think an idea to death, we accomplish nothing. Sadly, with me, that has been the case, too many times.

So, now I proceed, in my imperfect style
To offer some thoughts, which I tend to compile.
Now, we should all drive
With the aim to survive;
If we are lucky, we can do so and smile.

PROGRESS REPORT:
The store has a new Department, "Other Cool Stuff," which has designs that are not necessarily related to safety on the road, defeating Road Rage, or promoting "Road Peace."

It saddens me beyond words, each time I see another story about another cop who would have survived... (sob!) Police are charged with the duty of enforcing seat belt laws for the rest of us. When will they crack down on themselves?

PURPOSE PRIZE NOMINATION

I think there were a couple weeks left to apply when I heard about "The Purpose Prize." It is set up by the same folks who promote "Encore Careers." It is for folks over 60, who have found a new purpose for which to work. Use the link to learn more.

Assuming that I needed to write an essay on the mission of gridlocksmith, a lot of time was wasted, I fear. It would have been better to simply click on "Nominate Now," so I could verify exactly what was required to submit my candidacy. Lesson learned.

They asked very specific questions, which I found helpful in my quest to briefly and succinctly share what I hope to accomplish, and the concept of "Road Peace." Below, are some of my responses, taken from their thoughtful email that acknowledged the nomination and provided a copy of the questions and answers. I am impressed by their thoughtfulness, kindness and clarity. Even if I win no prize, the experience has been helpful.

Specific focus: Traffic safety and attitude adjustment through the concept of "Road Peace"

THE BIG IDEA--In 250-500 words, tell us the nominee's story. What's inspiring about it? What big social problem is the person tackling and how specifically is he or she going about it? What, concretely, does the work entail? Why is this innovative or entrepreneurial?

I want to encourage everyone to be part of the effort to improve traffic safety. (and, by extension, all kinds of safety, in and out of "workplace")
The question, "Can you imagine world peace while we are at war with each other on the road?" brings substance to the saying, "Think globally, act locally."
The concept of working for world peace by creating local, road peace, gives us each something relatively small to do (treating others with kindness, on the road) to begin changing the big picture.
We have lost more lives on our highways in any one of the last twenty years, than our military has lost overseas, in all of the last twenty years! Where is the media coverage? By establishing "Road Peace" as a step toward "World Peace," I think the media can be persuaded to give the issue higher priority. People who want peace will understand that modification of our road behavior holds many lessons that can be applied world wide.
It has been theorized that drivers become angry because they feel powerless. I believe that, just as social mores are more powerful than the rule of law (as regulators of behavior), we have great power when we stubbornly persist in setting good examples.
Attempting to address two needs at the same time, I have opened an online store (www.Zazzle,com/gidlocksmith*) to make available bumper stickers and other items that carry positive messages about traffic safety. As more items find their way into public view, income will be generated to help pay some bills.

THE BEGINNING--In what year and at what stage in the person's career did the work or idea for which he or she is being nominated begin? What was the person doing immediately prior to starting this work? (Maximum length: 75 words)

The concept of "Road Peace" as a step toward "World Peace" was born during the last months of 30 years of driving for a living. My last employment (which ended in July, 2009) involved transporting patients to and from medical or therapy appointments. The death of a brother on the highway, in 1969, caused me to have thoughts about doing something regarding traffic safety, but had no solid idea of what I might attempt.

IMPACT--Concretely, what impact has this work had on the community, the region, and the world? What have been the outcomes of the work in the past few years? (Maximum length: 150 words)

It is far beyond my abilities to measure the impact of any safety effort, nor could I attribute that impact to any particular campaign.
I do feel certain, however, that those who take up the challenge to set a safe example in traffic will benefit through less stress and danger. I feel that the motivation to do something good is a big factor in traffic law compliance.

I am beginning to make contact with a number of traffic safety organizations, and am offering to volunteer my time to assist (and learn from) them. Mothers Against Drunk Driving is one group that I am already building a relationship with; I plan to participate in an event in Baltimore on May 8. Toastmasters meetings have helped me feel that I may soon be able to address large groups. My designing and writing poems will also continue.

What on earth are you doing in there?

I see your car, now.
Well, I can almost see it,
through the flames that have it fully surrounded.
The smell of the burning plastic
fouls my nose.
The heat keeps would-be rescuers at bay.
What on earth are you doing in there?

I remember, now, that day...
we were at a red light, next to each other.
When I held up my seat belt as a friendly reminder,
I was startled to hear you say that you don't use it.
You explained that you feared being trapped by the belt
if you were to crash and the car caught fire.
What on earth are you doing in there?

The light turned green, and you were gone
before I could ask how you planned to survive a crash
without your seat belt.
I went on my way, wondering,
how could I, a stranger, impress you
with the danger you are putting yourself in.

GRIDLOCKSMITH: GATECRASHER!

Yes, friends, it's true. I crashed the party.

But, in my defense, I had been told that the event, "Feet First Caucus," was open to all. As it turned out, it was open to all attendees of the 89th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board. Had I successfully applied for "Media" participation, things would have been different. With a Media badge a person could have access to the whole shebang.

Fortunately for me, by the time I was approached with the query about my status, only a few minutes remained. This means I did get some pics, schmoozed a bit, and had a bite (cheese and crackers). They were quite polite, and seemed to understand my embarrassment over getting "bad information." No hard feelings. Perhaps, next time, I can be legit.

Since I had eaten a late lunch, I did not feel motivated to join the food line.Besides, as I was wearing my home-made sandwich board, and carried a sample tote bag and camera, my hands were already filled. Those who did patiently endure the line were rewarded...

...with a pretty nice spread of yummy treats.
The fancy stuff was gone by the time I made my way to the table,
but a variety of cheeses, crackers and bread remained.

Sorry, I did not catch the speaker's name,
but I do recognize the National Mall in Washington, D.C.,
and buildings that include the Capitol, in the background.

Wait. Isn't that guy in the blue badge sweater, John Wetmore,
of Pedestrian Perils? Yup. Let's have tea, some time, eh?

Well, with my red baseball cap, coat and sandwich board, I'm sure that no one thought I was a deliberate crasher. I managed to spread the idea that "Road Peace" may be a step toward World Peace, met a few folks, and even had my picture taken by someone who seemed amused by something on my board.

After finishing my cheese and crackers, I departed without fanfare. My first encounter with a group of actual traffic engineers and other professionals could have been worse. Another deposit in the bank of stories of gridlocksmith misadventures has been made.

Morale Quotient (MQ) remains high.

We expect folks like AAA and Government agencies to be enormous resources for traffic safety advocacy. Their work is acknowledged and appreciated.

Support and encouragement are needed by Grass Roots Traffic Safety Activists (GRTSAs). Can we each have a special link section for other GRTSAs to show that support and encouragement?

We might also engage in a dialog (Does such a forum exist, somewhere?) to share experiences and resources, as well as keeping each other informed. It is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that we could get discounted office supplies, as well as other goods and services by shopping jointly. We can also be there for each other for letter writing campaigns or events that need volunteers. The ways in which we can team up are limited only by our imagination.

The value of our creativity, outside-the-box thinking and commitment should not be underestimated, nor under-appreciated. Working together, we can make much progress on the path to "Road Peace," a step on the road to "World Peace."

SURPRISE! - "ROAD PEACE" in U.K.

The new year is starting off with lots of surprises... for one, the term "road peace" has been thought of by others. In the U.K. there is a site called RoadPeace.org. It calls itself a "charity providing support for victims of road crashes and campaigning for justice, road safety and road danger reduction." You may want to check it out, especially if you have connections in the U.K.

Another surprise regarding "road peace" is the fact that the UN Road Safety Collaboration is also in the act.

Yet one more "road peace" piece is this piece from The Philipines.

Still more surprises... I found not one, but two activists in my area. Well, one led to the other, actually, but it feels wonderful to think that there can be allies close enough to entertain the idea of getting some "face time." The first is a television producer who focuses on pedestrian safety. In his response to my email, he sent a link to this blog by a visually impaired pedestrian.

Other great news: My brother, the talented nature photographer, gave permission for me to play with one of his photos. (It is one of my favorites, and can be seen on the site.) Soon, it will be available as poster, t-shirt, etc. It will look something like this...

The first time I saw the photo in the poster, above, I thought about the issue of child safety, and how kids get killed in the driveway, which is one of the big issues at kidsandcars.org. They also are very concerned about the tragedy of children being left in locked cars, where they die of heat stroke. Here is a touching story from The Washington Post.

The velcro straps, looped through the holes, make it possible to carry two large posters, hands free. Encountering the folks at community gatherings, parades, and health fairs, it's nice to be able to shake hands, take photos, and hand out literature, etc.

If you can make a collage, you can do this. These were made from recycled displays of architect's renderings on strong foam core sandwiches, often called "gatorboard." Strong cardboard from large appliance boxes could also be used. If you are not planning on using yours far into the future, less sturdy materials would be acceptable.

Markers, Paper, glue, duct tape (available in various colors- I used red and gray) and clear plastic covering for inclement weather complete the list of materials. I found scissors, a large paper cutter and a box cutter useful.

These have a scruffy, amateurish look by design. I want viewers to think, "I can do that."

You, too, can promote traffic safety, or other good causes with greater visibility, using your own home-made wearable posters.

I am thinking of an old friend who "always" buckled up... but forgot on the worst possible day: the day she totaled her car! She spent months in the hospital, and may have painful reminders for the rest of her life. The price for forgetting can be expensive, indeed!

During the years since, I have developed an interesting technique for gently reminding people to consider activating their life protection devices -- aka, seat belts. I suspect that it may have prolonged a number of lives.

If it appears that the driver in question may be of questionable character, or seems downright thuggish, I would pause to consider if this is one of those rare people who might respond with hostility. Oh, well, we can't save everyone.

Some just shrug or hoist a nose.
(I never lose any sleep over those.)

THE PROCEDURE

While stopped at a lite,
I wave as I'm smiling,
To show that I'm friendly,
Though not too beguiling.

If the prospect smiles, too,
Then, is surely deserving
of the helpful reminder

BUS DRIVERS: LEARN PURPOSE OF "HAZARD" SIGNALS

I have been noticing that many bus drivers seem to lack the understanding that "hazard signals" (aka- "flashers," or "blinkers") actually engage their turn signals so that it appears they are signaling that they are turning both ways at once. Until buses (and other vehicles) are designed with separate signals for turns and hazards, we are denied the ability to signal our intention to turn while the hazard signals are operating.

Perhaps it's time that we have separate signals for turns and hazards?

Traffic safety is very serious business. People are killed and injured on the road every day. We have to be alert and cautious.

But, I believe in fun. If something is not fun, it is not being done right. So, there's a game that I want to encourage people to play, while driving. It is called, "Who Can I Help, Next?"

Just by being helpful - leaving room for lane-changers, not blocking intersections and driveways, looking for folks trying to unpark, and any other way we can be thoughtful of others will increase the mellow quotient in traffic. That's how the game is played. If you choose to become a player, you will be rewarded with warm fuzzies, and a relaxed feeling that will do your heart good. It will ease stress on all of us, and make driving more fun.

It is a big weekend, and one that is famous for traffic concerns. Folks eager to make use of the dwindling summer are joined on the road by others who are heading off to college, etc. Each driver seems to view the others as obstacles, rather than humans. We need to resist the pull to objectify one another, and respect and treat others the way we wish them to treat us.

JUDGE NOT...IF YOU'RE AN ERRHEAD

By now, most everyone has heard of the story about the Maryland judge who let the air out of someone's tire. (Talk about a heavy penalty for parking in the wrong spot!) He felt that leaving a note would not be effective.

My question: What if the other driver came back just then, and would have moved out of the space, making it available for hizzonner? A flat tire, then, would hardly be in the judge's best interest.

Reminds one of the story from the French Revolution... bread was in short supply. Mob response: burn down the bakery!

Could this be the same judge who, years ago, found me guilty after the officer explained that the ticket was written in error? If so, an errhead, he must truly be.

During a recent visit to The Partnership for Safe Driving, this article, "The Partnership for Safe Driving Thanks and Stands with the National Safety Council" caught my eye. The issue in question was... distracted driving and cell phones. Not surprisingly, they see a connection that we should all be aware of in the National Safety Council article, "Hands-Free Phones No Safer Than Handheld Phones."

The reason there is little difference in the amount of distraction is simple. We don't think with our hands.

"But.. how is that any different from talking with passengers?" one might ask.

Most aware passengers will consider traffic conditions before asking the driver to ponder a perplexing query. Their own safety is in the balance of your attention. Besides, no passenger wants to hear, "You're really distracting me from driving safely. Would you like to get out at the next bus stop?"

On the other hand, the person on the other end of the phone call is totally unaware of where you are, traffic-wise, and can provide distracting comments at the very worst moments.

Yes, friends, there really is a place where people can learn "HOW TO DRIVE LIKE A MORON." I fondly recalled this as an AOL Hometown site. (AOL shut that down, 11-06-08)

While tidying up the mess that is my office, I ran across a note about it. Through the miracle we know as "Google," it has been found. Much to my glee.

Of course, if you have ambitions leaning toward long life, you are likely to recognize it as a tutorial on how not to drive. (duh!)

Once again, I advise all who wish not to become angry when jerky drivers appear, (anger is only a "d" away from danger) remember this short refrain:

If there was ever a time to be buckled up...

A beautiful Spring day, with hardly a hint of a cloud in the sky and I was loving it. Heading for downtown D.C. on Massachussetts Avenue (to make a pick-up for the courier company for which I was an independent contractor), I had crossed Wisconsin Avenue and was about to enter an unmarked danger zone.

Perhaps traffic on the other side of the street had at least a clue that workers were down in the sewer, pumping up some sort of grunge. It was flowing down their side, filling and hiding potholes still waiting to be patched up since the previous winter.

After passing the home of the Vice President on Observatory Circle, I could see the British Embassy ahead. Suddenly, I saw nothing. Well, nothing on the other side of the windshield, that is. A car on the other side had hit a pothole full of muck, and I was the recipient who could not duck.

Having just started to change lanes to my right, my first thought was that I was about to be in the midst of a multi-car pile-up. I am happy to report that this did not happen. However, my journey did come to a very abrupt adjournment. As the Brits would say, "smashing!"

It was a lamp post that stood, unharmed by my pathetic wreck of a Mazda GLC. I, too, was unharmed, as I was glad to report to the people who had appeared to check my condition. I had, as always, been wearing the seat belt. Should I call it, "Life Belt?"

I now tell this story with one last caveat, "When you need it, you won't have time to put it on!"

What is the most dangerous thing a driver can do in traffic?

DUI?

No brainer! Definitely makes the Top Ten List.

What other driver actions would you nominate for the list?

Speeding up to pass in the right hand lane at the point where other traffic is attempting to merge? (Ooo, good one.)

How about those who are exiting the expressway onto the second ramp of the cloverleaf, (you know, the tight curve?) and, crossing paths with entering traffic, speeds up to get in front of said traffic, then having to slow down in front of said traffic, while said traffic is attempting to accelerate to expressway speed. Did you follow all that? I'm getting dizzy, myself.)

Then, there's the tailgater, in such a hurry to pass... after doing so, pulls directly in front of you and decides that you should be a tailgater, too, and slams on the brakes so hard that the tires are belching smoke! (Thankfully, I've only encountered one who was that stupid.)

I could go on and on, but, if I let myself do that, I'll be up all night. Why not let you do it?

AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

You don't have to start a website in remembrance of a lost loved one to make a difference in traffic safety, but, some folks do it... and do it well. They even have a store to help support the cause.

There is also a "Useful Contact" page that includes phone numbers and websites for child safety seat makers and auto makers from Acura to Volvo and Jaguar to Kia to Maybach.

These fine people are an example of "grassroots traffic safety activists." Not content to merely advocate ideas, procedures and behaviors, they have actually made information available that
has saved lives, set up a foundation that helps people in financial need to obtain safety seats, and Kyle's Kindness Project.

My hat is off to them, with most sincere condolences on the loss of their treasured son.

OK, I know, traffic safety is serious stuff; it's true. But, a somber demeanor can lead to depression, and where does that get anyone? As a wise mentor used to say, "If it isn't fun, it isn't being done right."

He was asserting that when we are having fun, we are more relaxed. This means that we think better, more clearly and creatively. Creative thinking combined with clarity? Sounds like good things just have to happen.

Laughter is a surefire sign of fun, but it has a greater significance. When we laugh, we let go of our embarrassment, and, we sometimes present some of our wildest, most creative ideas. Exposing ourselves to possible ridicule takes courage, and laughter discharges fear, thus, helping us to overcome our fears.

It helps, when in a brainstorming group, to have an agreement not to ridicule, but, rather, try to outdo each other with even wilder ideas.(The morale boost and comeraderie are added benefits.) The craziest idea is not likely to be your ultimate plan or objective, tactic or strategy, but may spark some worthy ideas that the group will want to pursue.

Generally, this happens when stretches of the road are not divided.

When the driver approaches a divided section, it seems that signs

that scream out, "WRONG WAY" are not always enough to get the

driver to do the right thing. Whether the driver is sleepy, drunk,

distracted, dyslexic or anti-authoritarian, it seems that something

more needs to be done to protect our lives.

SUGGESTION:

Strategically placed "rumble strips" could alert the wrong-way

driver that something is amiss.

Drivers who are headed the proper direction may also benefit,

as they will be reminded to reduce speed.

It is like a war on our highways, sometimes. "Road Warriors" are everywhere, and "Road Rage" seems all too common.

Recently, I have been thinking about war and peace and casualties that are weekly named and numbered. Remember the fanfare when dead U.S. troops reached 3,000?

Why does the press not show similar interest in the casualty count on our roads? The death toll on U.S. roads has hovered at over 40,000 annually for the last 20 years!

Is it not time that we start a new "PEACE MOVEMENT" to bring attention to the blood being spilled on our highways?

It is not an entirely different issue, as I am sure some will claim. The issue has to do with attitudes toward other people. Do we truly respect one another? Do we have kindness in our hearts? Can we see that "What goes around, comes around?" If we drive without regard for the safety of others, we will someday find, "Our chickens have come home to roost."

If you wish to see peace on our roads, the most important thing you can do, I believe, is to set a safe example. If you are committed to doing that, and want to contribute your ideas to help further the cause, may I suggest that we have an online "Think Tank" where we can share our best ideas.

School Bus Seat Belts?

Recently, I read about an accident involving a school bus that plummeted off an overpass, killing a number of students.

The issue of seat belts was raised, with cost being cited as the main objection. I am sure many parents are concerned that the rowdies will use the belts as weapons against others. Such misbehavior is in the realm of certainty, while life-threatening accidents are relatively rare.

The issue is not likely to be resolved any time soon. Meanwhile, a reminder to drivers (and others) could be posted on the buses:

"Please act kindly. We have no seat belts!"

Here is an article about new seat belt designs at Ford. I wonder if they are working on something for bus riders.

Imagine a world with no wars, no animosity between humans; it is a world where all people see that everyone is well thought about and cared for. (It is our mission in life in this nirvana-world.) All people care about you, and you care about them.

In such a world could there be such a thing as "road rage?" Of course not. ...well, maybe a little... we will probably still have emotions.

How long will it take to evolve into such beings?

It better not take very long. We are facing a time when some people will not only have the desire to wipe out "intelligent life" on our planet, but the technology to do so.

Many people have, over the centuries, cried out for peace. Attempts have been made to create peaceful, civilized societies. A war was deemed to be the last... "the war to end all wars."

A world at peace cannot simply be wished into existence. War cannot be simply wished away.

A tremendous change in attitude will be required if we are to move toward true peace.

Would a world in which all drivers treated each other with kindness be a step in the right direction? Imagine such a thing!

What would you be willing to do to bring us a step closer to world peace?

Forgive those who don't "measure up?" (including yourself)

WHEN DO YOU MERGE?

[After writing the following, I recalled writing about this in a
previous post. You may wish to compare. How do they hold up?]

There has been some discussion regarding when it is best to merge when a lane is ending for roadwork (or whatever).

Inevitably, a sign advises drivers that a lane will end a fair distance before it actually ends. It generally gives no instruction as to what drivers ought to do before that point. (?)

Some are of the opinion that it means to get into the thru lane, n-o-w. Acting on that assumption, those who move over immediately create a disparity in volume of traffic between the two lanes. They create one lane bogged down in creeping, b-to-b traffic, and another lane that is left with plenty of room-to-zoom.

I have, at times, come over a hill (or around a curve) to be greeted by such a scene. What to do? Hmmm...

Just as nature abhors a vacuum, so does traffic. The vacuum will suck traffic along, passing the displeased, disturbed, and disgusted drivers in the creepy lane. Can't be helped. Law of nature.

Just as naturally, when the point is reached that civilized merging ought to occur, we have drivers who are steamed and feeling dissed; they have no desire to allow someone to merge in front of them. It is an understandable desire to get even. It is just as understandable that the other drivers expect a civilized alternate merge.

Do we really need this kind of aggravation?

It is so easy to avoid.

Since there is no reason to let perfectly good pavement go to waste, let the drivers maintain both lanes up to the merge point. No vacuum will be created. No one must feel slighted or disrespected. We all travel at about the same speed. Instead of seeing cars zoom by, we see fellow humans alongside. We accept that we are all in this, together, and there is no reason for discourtesy.

All that is needed is a sign that this is what is expected of us.

SAD ANNIVERSARY

It has been forty years since the death of my youngest brother. He was on a camping/bicycling adventure from Sioux Falls, S.D. to the Twin Cities, where another brother still lives.

(That other brother, Mike Shoop, is a well known nature photographer, who recently electrified a Corvette. You may see his photos here.)

Ricky did not make it to his destination. The only witness was the truck driver, who had the misfortune of having to live with what happened for the rest of his life.

Why should we drive (bike, walk) safely? Not only to preserve our own lives, but so we don't have to live with such a thing on the conscience.

My poem for Ricky is in the sidebar, but I present it below in a tidier version for easier reading.

Florida's worst drivers to retake driving test

According to this story from The Miami Herald, " Florida will soon start sending some of the state's worst drivers back to school." The new law becomes effective at the start of 2010, and could have a major impact on how seriously drivers take their responsibility for public safety.

Since it takes three crash related tickets in three years to send a driver "back to school," don't expect to see anyone do so until 2013. Still, it gives folks something to think about.

SPRING BRINGS NEW LIFE

Yes, friends, Spring has sprung, bringing new life... perhaps, even to my old YAHOO! Group, CareAboutTraffSafety. You don't even have to click the link to get more info, since I am posting the opening (invitation/description) page right here...

Description

Remember when driving was fun, and "road rage" was uncommon? What would make traffic safer? Can we get rid of "Merge Right?" (into blind spot?) Double fines for speeding in areas of merging traffic? Single lane rumblestrips just before the merge area? Develop cars that read the driver's mind, then automatically signal to other drivers?
Let's have fun & make this a wide-open think tank! This is not the place to flame other drivers. Chances are, their misdeeds are unintentional. Don't we all get distracted occasionally? Let's forgive, but not forget to consider ways to improve... ourselves (set a good example?),... our vehicles (variable brake lights?),... our roads (design better signs!), ... and... ??
Considering how heavy the topic can be, it is good to clean out negative emotions. Understand that our thinking and perception can be clouded by these. So, shake and laugh off the fears. Cry out our grief. The process of getting to our best thinking and energy is well explained at http://www.rc.org.
This means that we don't put down any ideas for being silly, (Silly ideas are most welcome! Laughter helps remove our blinders and spark more creative thinking.) As we think inside as well as "outside the box," let us endeavor to politely communicate and appreciate our thinking, respect, caring and humor.

Nick Adenhart died in surgery following a terrible accident that took the lives of two others as well. The 22-year-old pitcher had just made his fourth major league start with the Angels and left with a 4-0 lead after 6 innings - obviously, it is felt that a brilliant career has been nipped in the bud. Most sincere condolences to all who grieve.

According to AP:

"The car they were riding in was broadsided in an intersection by a minivan that apparently ran a red light, police said.

"Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside, was driving on a suspended license because of a previous drunk driving conviction. Preliminary results indicated Gallo's blood-alcohol level was "substantially over the legal limit" of .08 percent, police Lt. Kevin Hamilton said.

"Gallo was booked into jail on three counts of murder, three counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol. No bail was set."

It is Cherry Blossom time in Washington,D.C. Here is a pic of my sweety and me three years ago, visiting the blossoms at the Tidal Basin, across from the Jefferson Memorial.

As you have probably noticed, I have not been posting with any regularity in recent months. I have viewed this as a place to work on articles for the website, and have just recently decided that it is ok to make shorter posts that don't require as much time. This will be one of many quickies to come...

Say No to camo seatbelts

"When you need it, you won't have time to put it on!" That is why it is important to be in the habit of fastening the belt when we first get into the car.

Sometimes, perhaps, in a hurry, with mental distractions we don't think of it. The belt is often the same color as the seats (camouflaged) and is easily overlooked.

How about making the seat belt scream out, "Put me on!" They would be forgotten less often if they had black and white stripes (racing stripes?) making them more visible. This will also make them more visible to others.... like... law enforcement... or friends who might remind us to do the safe thing. (Are car makers listening?)

(When reminding others, the preferred phrase is, "Remember your seat belt." rather than, "Don't forget..." Why? The human mind wants to be positive, and tends to forget or disregard the negative. Thus, the phrase, "Don't forget..." becomes, "Forget..." More favorable results are usually achieved by positive messages.)

When passengers seem reluctant, they can be told, "If a dog runs in front of us, I will hit the brakes rather hard and you could find yourself getting too friendly with the windshield!" (Windshields are notoriously un-cuddly.)

Friends don't let friends drive (or ride) without the belt!

SAMMY SEATBELT AND THE FIERY CRASH SCENARIO

A driver explained that she feared being trapped by her seatbelt if the car should catch fire after a crash. She truly felt that such an occurrence would mean her doom.

SAMMY SEATBELT SAYS...

Please, think this one through. How hard would the collision have to be to set fire to the car? Without the belt, what is the likelihood that you would even be alive? If you did survive, would you be conscious and able to escape? By having the belt on, you are better able to walk away from a crash... with or without the fire.

There is another danger to be aware of that could lead to being trapped: the airbag! Many drivers have been taught to place hands on the wheel at the 10 and 2 (o'clock) positions. It is now recommended to hold the wheel near the bottom so that the airbag won't break the driver's wrists. Broken wrists could make disengaging the belt something of a challenge. (!)

Always buckle up. When you need it, there will not be time to "click it."

FRUSTRATED DRIVERS ENDANGER WORKERS

Surely, someone must understand that driver frustration does nothing to enhance safety. Expediting traffic safely around work areas should be a high priority for those in charge of setting up those areas.

With traffic limited to a single lane, things get really bogged down behind a driver waiting to make a left turn. Imagine how drivers must have felt when the other lane was taken away for no other apparent reason than to place the sign there! The right lane could have remained open for "right turn only." (or to get around the left turner)

PULEEZE, PULEECE, PULEEZE!

Is it just me, or have others (you) noticed that Police frequently fail to set a good example? Is there some way we could persuade them that it would be a good idea?

Use of seatbelts (or, should we call them, lifebelts?) can save a police officer as easily as a civilian. I recall that a few years back, an off duty police officer met a drunk... head-on! The drunk was buckled, but the officer was not. You can guess which one survived.

Years ago, I used my (not patented) belt reminder technique (the one where I give a friendly wave, smile, then kiss my lifebelt) for an officer at a red lite. He was pleased that I was wearing mine, but said that he could not wear his. (?) The lite turned green before I could ask why he could not wear it. Would it make it more difficult to dodge bullets?

A Takoma Park, Md. police officer lost his life when he was struck head-on by a drunk driver. The drunk survived. The officer might be alive, today, if he had developed the habit of obeying the law that, ironically, it was his job to enforce on others.

Since our taxes go to hire and train the police, should we not feel we have a right to demand that they take better care of themselves? All drivers tend to build habits of doing - or not doing - the right thing. I wonder how many lives might be saved by setting a good example.

SIMPLE DELAYS NO NEED FOR CRAZE

On our recent trip to the Shenandoah Balloon Festival, we experienced a nearly half hour delay. This is part of life. Nothing to be upset about, right?

Destinations beckon so sweet
Making us wish our journey complete.
But, when delays
Cause us to craze,
Be glad; you're not under the sheet.

Come to think of it... aren't all our destinations (save the last) temporary?

A little delay/ a little dismay.
Big crashes/ ashes to ashes.

Our patience was rewarded with a beautiful time at the festival. By four o' clock, many were leaving. They were convinced that the balloons would be grounded, as they were the previous evening, by wind. They decided it smart to get an early start to avoid the crowds. Bless them, for their early departure greatly diminished the traffic, later.

And the balloons?

Had to wait...

...for the wind to abate...(Let the kites have a turn.)

...until, bravely...

Indeed. After 17 years in a house that we thought was to be my wife's inheritance, we faced the daunting tasks of sorting and jettisoning years worth of packratism, finding an affordable place and getting everything out by Halloween. A tricky treat, indeed.

The Holidays seem to have passed in a blur. I don't even remember how many cards got sent out. After getting one from a cousin, I sent her one.

Setting up the new home has been a long process. As we near the ides of March, a lot of stuff remains in boxes and the office is still in chaos.

In January, I undertook 2 weeks of training to drive for Metro Access. I was excited, and, although the hours were long, (We were told to show up one Saturday morning at four.) I think the training, provided by MV TRANSIT, went well. I was hired by Metro Health-Tech, a subcontractor, but it didn't take long to figure out that the long hours were taking quite a toll on my bum knee and 63 year old body. They have assured me that I can soon be driving a shorter day with a sedan. My knee will be so grateful! And, while on this short sabbatical...

Hopefully, the GRIDLOCKSMITH store can open soon. Nothing to worry about; all the designs are safely stashed in my ...head. The old iMac has both system X, (compatible with the Lexmark scanner/copier/printer and the DSL connection) and system 9 (where AppleWorks resides). You can see that there are some hurdles to negotiate... as McCauley Culkin said, "woof!"

There are lots of serious things to write about, (like Metro Bus drivers killing pedestrians and running into each other) so I will close this short post with the sincere wish that the last half year has not been so hectic for you.

Back At Last...MERRY CHRISTMAS

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas (or whatever holiday you prefer) and a great, prosperous and safe new year...

My bad! Far too much time afk (away from keyboard), but, I can explain... uhh, it was extenuating circumstances. Yeah, that's the ticket! Very extenneratin'...

The sabbatical began when we found that we were obliged to move to a new home. Besides the usual new home hunting, much time was consumed sorting, stashing and trashing seventeen years worth of accumulated stuff. When you don't expect ever to have to move again, stuff does tend to pile up... "Someday we'll get around to fixing that..."

Time flies... (It is now November, 2007 and I am unable to alter the date of this post, which actually is the date of the first draft.) The job at Health-Tech did not pan out, but I am now busily and happily employed by Transcend as a driver, delivering patients to and from therapy and medical appointments. My longest trip thus far was a journey from Washington, D.C. to Blacksburg, Virginia. Other drivers have been to West Virginia and Delaware. We cover a sizable area.

I am trying to adapt to a different computer (The old G3 imac has been replaced with a not-so-old G4 emac.) and the new OS and new Blogger idiosyncrasies. (Should it take a week to upload a video clip?) Oh, yes, Paypal seems not to function for me. What have I done wrong, this time?

Well, other duties beckon; I will post this, now, so that you will know that I have not been swallowed by a whale.

CAPITAL OF THE NATION-READY FOR EVACUATION?

The good ol' Washington Post really stuck its neck out with a bold prediction in their editorial, "Forecast: Gridlock" (Thursday, June 29, 2006). The subhead - "If rain can paralyze movement in downtown Washington, are we ready for a terrorist attack?" - pays tribute to Mother Nature's recent demonstration of raw power.

Should Maryland reconsider the decision to prevent I-95 being built into Washington,D.C.?
(The North Central Freeway was canceled in 1977.)

Without a throughway, traffic from I-95, north of town, is forced onto the beltway (495) and then onto streets to access downtown. This has caused a beltway bottleneck that has consumed extra time and fuel, every day, for years and years. (Not to mention stress and frustration and mishaps)

The same scenario plays out each evening, in reverse. But, commuters have the option of working late, waiting out traffic to enjoy a less stressful return to their homes. In the event of a full scale evacuation, we will all pile into a horrible mess of traffic that strains the imagination.

We must insist that I-95 (North Central Freeway) be built without delay! Invoke Homeland Security. Lives are at stake.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE...

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Of course, by the time I finish and post this, it will be history... ok, as I write, it is already history. The date of the post is actually the date it was first saved "as draft" and is not always accurate, since I frequently need to break away from writing to tend to other matters. (Such as watching Stevie Wonder entertain the crowds on the National Mall, in Washington, D.C., followed by stupendous fireworks and the traditional Souza music.)

This picture was taken (as were the others on this post) by my sweet wife, Laureen Summers. The "...for food.." sign was left in the car, since I needed both hands free for my extemporaneous dance/march performance and fanning steamy spectators with the front board, plus handing out home-made business cards ("free tickets to the website"). Not having had an opportunity like this to "ham it up" in many years, I took full advantage.

The hardest part of the sandwichboard construction was choosing what not to include. There was so much that I wanted to say that it was going to look like a Junior High Science Fair display (minus the dynamic aspects). To be readable from across the street, the display had to be very limited... so, much was eliminated to make room to enlarge. I decided to leave some messages small so that I could gauge audience interest. (The limited supply of cards would go to those who made some effort to read the finer print.)

Here is the front side, clearly exposing the fact that my lettering skills are a bit rusty. (Calligraphy was never my strong suit.)

Below- on the march... and ... "the fine print" is revealed.

If you are really serious about working for world peace, why not start on the road?

Those are two philosophers you don't usually find, side-by-side, but, I think they help make the point.

Sorry about that. All the rain, lately has made me silly.

The D.C. area will be cleaning up for some time. (weeks?)

I really have to dash off to prepare to march in the Takoma Park, Md. Independence Day Parade. Home made sandwich boards and a colorful propeller hat will comprise my "costume," and I can only hope that my aging body will survive the miles long march.

If you happen to be in the crowd, give me a wave. This will be your gridlocksmith's first publicity seeking adventure in the real world. Hopefully, the message will get out to the revelers to "drive kindly" and be "part of the solution."

HELMET HEAD OR HELL MET HEAD?

I am somewhat torn about the issue of motorcycle helmet laws. (seatbelt laws, too, for that matter) Partly, I suppose, it is the philosophy that is so well expressed at DARWIN AWARDS.
But, all that is a wee bit off topic.

Years ago, the actor who portrayed Buddy Holly, Gary Busey, who was fond of riding sans helmet, took a nasty blow and spent considerable time recovering. Later, he would appear on TV to encourage helmet use, saying that sense had been pounded into his head. (In such encounters, the pavement has yet to lose.)

Unfortunately, it requires great effort to learn from the mistakes of others. So, now it is Ben Roethlisberger's turn. As smart as a professional quarterback with a Superbowl Ring must be...

The siren's call
Lures one and all
To take too many chances.
And these dangerous dances
Can cause a pall.

GATOR REPORT FROM ALI...

(Dress in dark clothes to play in traffic, at nite! That's no way to win the Darwin Award.)

Now comes this report from our buddy near "the southern command," Ali Gater...

Hello, mates! From the hot and unusually dry land of shrinking swamps and gregarious gators (and Gaters) comes the news that even gators know to look both ways before crossing. (It should be pointed out that Florida officials want drivers to be aware of the altitude-challenged (low-down & harder to see) critters and have posted signs.)

Here is a Sun-Sentinel report of a smarter-than-the-average gator. Since the link may expire, I will tell you that it looked both ways, waited for an opening, then crossed the road, safely.

Wouldn't it be lovely if more humanoid pedestrians were so wise?

ANOTHER REASON TO DRIVE KINDLY

Imagine that another driver on the road, near you, is severely depressed (perhaps even contemplating suicide by running into the nearest large tree or other solid object - or, maybe, the next driver who acts like a jerk).

Would it really be a good idea to treat that driver unkindly? How do you know which driver is that one? Are there more than one?

What would it hurt?

JUST LIKE NATURE, TRAFFIC ABHORS A VACUUM

It seems that some people don't understand that if there is a large area of open roadway, drivers are going to be sucked into it as surely as if there had been a vacuum.

Someone wrote in the "Driving Me Crazy" feature of the "Bumper to Bumper" column (3/29/06) in our local GAZETTE, that drivers see an upcoming lane closure and "wait until the last second to get out of that lane, thus causing a line of cars in the adjacent lane to screech to a halt." Those drivers are vilified by the writer as self-centered and aggressive, and bemoans "...having been cut off several times..."

"Cut off?" That is a misnomer as people most commonly use the term. But, I have already clarified that (I hope) in a previous post. The issue I wish to address, here, is the question of how we, the driving public, should handle lane closures without "screeching." (either vocally, or tire-wise)

Should we surmise that the writer would have us all, immediately upon seeing our lane closed ahead, abandon our totally empty lane to get into a bumper to bumper line-up? Hmm? OK. Let's say that we do just that. How long before that line extends all the way back over a hill or around a curve? Here comes Joe Schmoe (perhaps, our writer?) who is suddenly aware that the lane is closed ahead, but the next lane is already a creeping B2B line. Hoo-boy! What to do? Following the writer's logic, Joe had best put the car in reverse, and find the end of that line! Or, maybe Joe is a rude and aggressive driver and continues to drive forward. Joe, of course, puts on signals and looks for someone to let him in. If Joe succeeds in getting into the other lane and is passed by other drivers (who could not bring themselves to abandon that lovely empty pavement) will he become resentful of them? Will he want to let them in? Will he crowd the bumper before him to become part of a solid wall of resentment and rage against those rude drivers who didn't get in back of the line?

This is insanity! We are certainly not going to agree to all get in the back of that line. It would be crazy and dangerous to even try.

So, what should we do?

Remember when banks had seperate lines to each teller? We were always faced with trying to figure out which line would get us to a teller quickest. When we guessed wrong, we felt so exasperated and demoralized. But if we guessed right, we waltzed out of there like the world was our oyster. (Perhaps, I exaggerate a teeny bit.) Then, something changed. The banks set up a single line! Wow, what a long line, we thought. But, we got used to it, and appreciated how quickly we got our business done on a first-come-first-served basis that was fair to all.

I propose that we use the bank line plan in reverse. Fully utilize the road by staying in lane and politely allow an alternate merge at the point of closure. (Traffic czars, please note: signs with the message, "MAINTAIN LANES - ALTERNATE MERGE AHEAD" or something similar would be a great help. We do need to know what is expected of us if we are to get on the same page.)

No more being faced with one empty lane vs a crawling line. No more resenting other drivers for zooming by. No more excuse for hostility!

SAFETY vs "TRIBUTE"

Your gridlocksmith has just celebrated thirty years of marriage with Laureen Summers (who took the lovely sunset photo on the first post) and it has been one fine adventure after another! (It was a fine outdoor wedding on a Virginia hilltop within sight of "Old Rag" on May 2, 1976.) After discovering how expensive restaurants can be, we had a lovely candle lit dinner at home. mmm!

On to the topic du jour...

A headline on page one of the Metro Section of the Washington Post (5-2-06) reads, "Roadside Tributes Wear Out Their Welcome" subhead: "Md. Officials Set to Enforce Ban, Citing Growing Size and Safety Concerns." It seems that some folks' tributes to loved ones who died on the highway have become elaborate enough to be considered distractions and safety hazards.

As a youth, growing up in South Dakota, I saw many roadside signs with the single word, "THINK" and a large "X" which marked the place where someone had died. If you came to a curve in the road with a dozen "THINK" signs, you tended to think about slowing down.

Could Maryland adopt the "THINK" sign as both a warning to motorists to be alert and to acknowledge those who have died on our highways?

ECLECTIC ACROSTIC "CONTEST"

THE GRIDLOCKSMITH has been preoccupied with trying to pay bills and such. (As well as recovering from his annual Spring allergy attack- (and as a bonus, an ear infection - gotta feel for the old guy) So, to keep the ball rolling, here is our guest columnist, bon vivant and old friend, Bo Guss... (His previous post)

Yes, friends, I am back with great news! THE GRIDLOCKSMITH has given the OK for a fun "contest" for all you creative traffic safety thinkers. I'm sure that you recall we recently discussed the danger of angry driving. Well, we've been thinking about doing a line of traffic safety promoting products like T-shirts and such. Heck, if enuf of you fine folks like 'em and buy 'em, GRIDLOCKSMITH might not have to work so hard trying to pay all them bills... and that kid of his just graduated college, last December. (Cum Laude! Congrats, Mel!)

Anyway, the "contest" works like this: The Gridlocksmith, or a trusted associate, will select from the submissions, a design to be used on T-shirts and, possibly, other items like coffee mugs, tote bags, fur coats, whatever you folks might get scammed into buying.

The object is to put together a profound statement about the danger of driving in an extreme state of anger, in acrostic form. The vertical punch word is: "DANGER." The first two lines are: DRIVING...

SAVED BY THE BELT

Do you recall seeing print ads that read, "SAVED BY THE BELT?"

Years ago, I was driving toward downtown, Washington, D.C. on Massachussetts Avenue on a clear, summer day. Unexpectedly, a curtain of muck covered the windshield, and before I could even think of the wipers, the car came to a sudden halt against a utility pole. Being in the habit of buckling up, I was unharmed. The muck was the result of teamwork and timing provided by sanitation workers pumping it up from under the street, one of our famous (cavernous) potholes, and another car hitting the invisible hole.

Perhaps my story will someday appear in one of those ads? You *do* always buckle up, don't you?

For those who love sarcasm... someone had to do a site like this. Doggiesnot has done it, rather thoroughly. It is called, "HOW TO DRIVE LIKE A MORON" and has been called, "a bible for useless drivers."

REMEMBER, the position of "gridlocksmith" is open to all. What does one need to do to be a gridlocksmith? Observe how you can have a positive effect on traffic flow, the mood of drivers around you, drive kindly and always set the safe example in traffic.

BACK IN THE SADDLE...(GINGERLY)

HOOEE! After being locked out of the blog dashboard (the inner sanctum in which these posts are produced) for so long, it seems appropriate to let loose with a bit of exultation. A nameless former team member got carried away and set up a new Blogger account, totally unaware, I'm sure, that it would block the door to our control room. ARG! The miscreant now is locked up in the stocks until we can administer a proper pelting with overripe tomatoes. Since they have yet to be transplanted into the garden, it will be a while...

Anyone out there, well informed and nerdish who would like to lend a hand with our stark learning curve? What do webmasters know that we should? HTML?

While working on the new website, gridlocksmith.com, (not ready for viewing, yet) an effort was made to set up another site, ROADRAGERS.COM. Surprise! It already exists. Not wishing to duplicate the efforts of others, (especially if others are more competent) why not direct ragers there, with the request that they come back to report their experiences, there?

It has been suggested that there should be a means for visitors to show their support for this iconoclastic infidel. Since the gridlocksmith has no government grants, and is working with tired, second hand equipment, he had to agree. Well, it's about time for your dysfunctional writer to trundle back to his sickbed. Not to worry. There should be no more huge lapses.(Sorry 'bout that!) The next few posts are nearly written.

Someone has pointed out to me that the word "anger" is only one letter short of "danger." If you are angry while driving, the letter "D" may be out of sight, but there's danger a plenty. Let me steal a little poetry from The Gridlocksmith...

TRAFFIC SAFETY

it is life and death.
in matters so serious
one must always laugh.

It is not always easy to laugh when other drivers are doing stupid/dangerous things, but we do have the power to decide to forgive and write it off as a mistake, rather than take umbrage and believe the other guy is evil. We benefit greatly by making the choice to relax and laugh. It is better for the heart, as well as the soul.

If we allow ourselves to get angry, we are more likely to make errors that could endanger ourselves and others. In short, we will be setting a bad example. That is to say, we become part of the problem. Email from The Gridlocksmith bears the following as part of his signature:

"Are you part of the problem,
or part of the solution?
Set a safe example in traffic."

As part of the Roadway Anger Gentle-fication Effort, you will be part of the solution.

"CUT OFF?"

A local paper in Silver Spring, Md., The Gazette, which mysteriously appears weekly in the front yard, has a traffic column called, "Bumper to Bumper." Recently, they offered readers a chance to sound off (in 50 words or less) in a new feature, "Driving Me CRAZY." I could not resist the opportunity to use "Our new outlet for road rage." Below is my first foray into venting upon this new venue...

Am I the only one who knows what it is to be "cut
off?"

Drivers have yelled at me that I was trying to cut
them off when they were the ones that cut me off!

If someone changes lanes in front of you, how are you
"cut off?" Where is it that you are prevented from
going?

If I change lanes because my exit is near, the last
thing I need is some doofus speeding up to get in my
way!

I fear that my 50 words are used up, but it would be
nice to add:

Passing on the right is illegal for a reason. It is
dangerous to speed up into someone's "blind spot."

WILL USPS BE OUR VALENTINE?

Many of us have wondered what effect it would have on Rush Hour if delivery people would just vanish for awhile. Couldn't hurt, eh? So, when a discusion regarding USPS trucks unfolded in the pages of The Washington Post, I had to chime in. Below is what I sent to the long time traffic maven, Ron Shaffer, AKA, Dr Gridlock.

Dr Gridlock,

Regarding the recent discussion about USPS trucks
during Rush Hour, perhaps a win-win solution is
possible.

The P.O.could use better public relations as well as
some cost cutting.  Why not adjust schedules so that
the trucks are off the streets during Rush Hours and
save fuel? (Not only for the P.O., but for the rest of
us, as well.)

This would result in less cursing at the P.O. by
motorists, of course, but it would also be a blessing
to the legions of office workers who engage in daily
panics to get the mail out before the final pick up.
(The P.O. might even get some of the business that now
goes to the competition.) With a later pick up, some
workers will stay in the office a bit longer, thus
making traffic a little  less gruesome.

Another benefit to us all would be gas savings, and
less dependence on you-know-what.

When "No" Means "Yes"

Why Is This So?

Because, where there once was a short acceleration lane to aid merging, there is now an abrupt merge into what has become a "passing lane." We will not see the return of the old acceleration lane, but we can do something about the misplaced "passing lane."

We should acknowledge the goodness of our fellow drivers. Many of them saw that traffic from a busy highway would need to merge into their flow. To expedite that merge so that traffic would not back up onto that highway and create a dangerous situation, they moved to the left to make room. Then, the knuckle-heads (you know who you are) decided that the right lane, with all that room, was perfect for passing! By doing so, they have made the situation worse.

The authorities have tried to handle this with signs that warned that "This Lane Is Closed To You" at certain times. Valiant effort.

One might be tempted to call for signs instructing drivers in the "slow lane" to yield to merging traffic. But, since the problem involves drivers who engaged in improper passing, will signs deter them? As I am fond of reminding scofflaws, (especially those in the diplomatic community) "The laws of physics are self enforcing."

Slow Lane Rumblestrips

As you rushed to catch a plane at BWI, you had your teeth jarred by an impressive set of them. Imagine the effect they could have in the "slow lane/passing lane." Gentle strips in the right lane will allow drivers to stay in the lane if they maintain the proper speed to allow merging.

Hmm. Here's another thought about signs... "Slow Lane Must Allow Alternate Merge."

Well, friends, this is a think tank, after all. What are your thoughts?

LETTER TO "HELOISE"

This could be the slogan for those who want
to remind others who may have forgotten
to buckle up for safety.

What follows is the complete text, with
only a small adjustment for the link to
darwinawards, of a letter (email, actually)
that I sent to the famous Heloise of
"Hints From Heloise" fame:

Heloise...

A friend who *always* buckled up totaled
her car one day. Unfortunately, she had
forgotten to buckle up. She spent months in
the hospital and expects to have painful
reminders for the rest of her life.

Here is my silent but effective technique
for reminding folks that it just might be a
good idea...

With a friendly wave and smile, I get the
other person's attention. Then, I hold my
seat belt up to my face and present an
exaggerated kiss upon the belt.

Their response is usually quite positive.
Sometimes, they even roll down the window
to voice their thanks for the reminder.

For those who are unmoved, I only shrug and
recall that darwinawards are meant for such people.

THE KEY TO GRIDLOCK

I suppose I should say a word about
GRIDLOCK. That word is.... PREVENTION!

As we all know, traffic flows along streets
that form a grid. When traffic volume
exceeds the capacity of the streets,
traffic snarls. Many a driver snarls.
People with a great desire to be
somewhere else start to focus even more
sharply on, "Get me outta here!"
Frustration leads to poor decision making.
Perhaps the most common bad decision in
heavy traffic is to advance into an
intersection without any certainty of
getting out before the lite changes.
Imagine that drivers are blocking *all* the
intersections.

This is gridlock. Once established, it takes
much time to get traffic flowing, again.

The best solution (Here comes that word...)
PREVENTION.

"As patience is a virtue,
Impatience is a sin.
If you can't get out of the intersection,
For gosh sakes, don't go in."

A CURE FOR RED LITE CAMERAS?

No sane driver wants to run RED lites. Why would anyone
want to risk being in the middle of an intersection just as
someone else is approaching from the side at full speed?
The Darwin Awards are not that hard up for candidates.

So, if people don't want to run RED lites, why does it happen?

"DILEMMA ZONE"

When the YELLOW lite comes on you are not certain exactly how
much time remains before the dreaded RED lite.
You must judge whether to stop, or proceed through the YELLOW.
The thought processes can become dizzying:

how long does this particular YELLOW stay on?
if I slam on the brakes, will something in the back come hurtling into my head?
will my car be struck from behind?
is the pavement wet or dry?

With all this thinking going on out there, it is a wonder that we don't accidentally
run RED lites more often.

The "Dilema Zone" (ie: Do I Stop or Speed Up?) as it is expressed
by at least one traffic engineer, is a source of driver stress that
we can do without.

It would be nice if we at least had a marker that said to us, "If the YELLOW comes on when you are at the speed limit, at this very spot, then you should proceed. If you have not made it this far, you should stop." There could be problems, such as weather, of course. Any more ideas?

RED LITE CAMERAS?

Cameras may not be the best possible solution to RED lite
runners. Aside from the expense, which is considerable, the
safety factor is questionable. Uncertain drivers sometimes will
stop at YELLOW lites, risking rear end collision. Don't believe it?
"Red-light cameras are blamed for a somewhat higher rate of
rear-end collisions caused by drivers braking suddenly at
intersections when lights turn yellow. "--WASHINGTON

Moreover, driver reaction has been cynical, many claiming that the YELLOW might be shaved to create violations and gain revenue.
The public can hardly be blamed for skepticism if officials do not
more aggressively seek our input.

If the public had been asked, it is likely that someone would have suggested count down signals such as we now see for pedestrians. Or, rumblestrips to mark the "Go-Zone." Or... How
about a system that requires no investment in new equipment at all? One allowing drivers to know exactly how much time remains before the lite turns RED, and whether to proceed or stop at the intersection.

EXTEND THE YELLOW (AND CALL IT MELLOW)

Let's give drivers a break. If we double the YELLOW time there should be no excuse for running the RED. Plus, to make sure drivers know how long the YELLOW will last, clearly mark the half point. This will not need to extend the time of the cycle. It can be accomplished by simply advancing the YELLOW to overlap the last part of the GREEN.

With this overlapping system, when the driver sees the YELLOW lite
come on, there will be twice as much time and distance to judge
whether to stop or go. (If you are twice as far from the intersection
when you see the lite, aren't you twice as likely to not even think of
speeding up?) When the GREEN disappears, the halfway point has been reached. If the motorist has not gone at least half the distance, stopping is the obvious choice.

The benefits from such a system include:

fewer driver errors from confusion and frustration.

Fuel savings will be enhanced as drivers, knowing further in advance, will elect to coast to the intersection.

Traffic flow could improve as left-turners see their opening sooner.

Can we call it "Mellow Yellow?" (That's right..)

Perhaps this could be tried, first, where red lite cameras exist. Then, those who are ticketed will not be able to complain about the shortness of the YELLOW lite.
